A columbita [(Fe, Mn)Nb2O6] tem esse nome não por causa da Colômbia; é na verdade uma homenagem ao Cristóvão de Colombo – navegador e descobridor da América.

Inicialmente, por confusões na identificação do elemento, o nióbio era chamado de colúmbio; com tal nomenclatura ainda permanecendo em alguns locais, como os EUA.

No Brasil o nióbio é também encontrado em carbonatitos.
